Welsh Garden with Views

Project Details

The property is set in a semi-rural landscape with stunning views across the Usk Valley towards the Black Mountains. The large garden, mainly laid to lawn, was only partially landscaped around the house. The client wanted a more functional, attractive space with two distinct areas: one for dining and another for lounging. The entrance was redesigned to replace a slippery gravel slope with more accessible stone steps, offering a welcoming transition from the driveway.

The garden is divided into two levels: the upper for family dining, and the lower for lounging. Timber retaining walls wrap the lower terrace, incorporating original timber with new sleepers along the south-facing wall. Planting borders soften the paving, and a reclaimed water trough adds a focal point.

At the front, stone steps replace the gravel path, enhancing accessibility without the need for a handrail or balustrade. The materials—natural stone and timber—blend seamlessly with the rural setting. Planting is low-maintenance, with evergreen shrubs, perennials, and seasonal deciduous plants that attract wildlife. A neat Pyracantha hedge along the front wall provides seasonal colour.
