This unusually shaped garden is set against the backdrop of a series of converted residential barns. The idea was to create a rustic cottage garden with defined functional spaces. A more intimate feel has been created by the separation of areas; a family dining area, an informal terrace with a gazebo loosening off to a long slender lawn planted with trees.
The dining area is slightly raised to give another dimension and is separated by the pergola to give a sense of transition from one area to the next and to provide structure. The gazebo has been positioned to provide privacy from the neighbouring driveway. To the side of the house, the long lawn has three Amelanchier trees positioned to enhance the length of the lawn.
A variety of flowering shrubs with berries and autumn colour provide food for wildlife. Evergreen plants create structure and winter habitat, with the colours of the perennials and bulbs drift from one to the next throughout the year.
